The straw-hat geometry spreads light across roughly 120°, so a single lamp covers a wider, more uniform emitting surface—ideal for LED strips, tube lights and wide-angle panel indication. The trade-off is lower on-axis intensity (mcd) than narrow-beam round lamps; when selecting, look at overall surface illuminance rather than the mcd figure alone.
